Why Let Hamas Off the Hook?

I guess I’m missing something.

People involved in the campus protests sweeping this country claim that they aren’t anti-Semitic. They just want Israel to stop killing innocent civilians.

That’s all well and good, but if the goal is to stop the death of civilians, why aren’t they also protesting against Hamas?

The only reason I can see is that they see Hamas’ murderous attack on October 7 as legitimate and the loss of 1,200 civilian Israeli men, women and children as justified. Then there is the matter of rape and torture committed by the Hamas fighters, as well as the kidnapping of hundreds of Israeli civilians must be justified.

Why protest against Hamas as well? Because Hamas is at least as guilty as Israel in the deaths of more than 34,000 Moslem civilians in Gaza.

The reasons?

Hamas started the war.

Hamas had to know what Israel’s reaction would be.

Hamas puts its military structure in the middle of civilians, making them vulnerable to attack.

Hamas has rejected several proposed cease-fires that would have stopped the fighting for at least a time, allowing for food and medicine to reach the starving Gaza civilians.

The only conclusion I can come to from all that is that Hamas is indifferent to the suffering of the civilians it is supposed to be protecting. And that’s the nice conclusion.

The bad one is that Hamas welcomes their deaths and suffering because it makes Israel look bad.

But all that doesn’t seem to have filtered into the brains of those on American college campuses who just blame Israel.

Perhaps they think Israel doesn’t have the right to exist—the “from the river to the sea” crowd.

Or perhaps they are just ignorant of the area’s history.

Or perhaps they are anti-Semitic and are using these protests as a cover to express their hate.

If these protesters are really serious about stopping the killing, they should protest against both Israel and Hamas.

Otherwise, it’s just another version of anti-Semitism.
