Jake has turned to heavy drinking to help him get through the night. He blames himself for the death in a traffic accident of his girlfriend with whom he was deeply in love. Kate is the product of a dysfunctional family. Her abusive father has destroyed her self-confidence. Now in college, she is struggling to create a better life for herself, and not having a great deal of success.
