Some Republicans in Congress apparently would rather have an issue that they believe will help them win in 2024 than in solving the nation’s problems.
The issue is immigration reform.
The Senate is working on a bipartisan deal, but it is probably dead on arrival in the House because the GOP’s hard right is seeing blood in the water. Take Representative Matt Gaetz, the North Florida Republican who bragged on CNN about getting Donald Trump to oppose any deals on immigration.
So much for the spirit of compromise on which this nation was founded. We have a Senate with equal representation because the small states were afraid of being swamped by the big ones. We have a House of Representatives because the big states believed they should have more say in the government. The Constitution counted slaves as three-fifths of a person for the apportioning of seats in the House because the slave states wanted more power. Of course, we have an Electoral College because none of the founders trusted the citizens. But that’s another story.
Now some on the Republican right argue the Democrats have come late to the table on immigration. As true as that may be, the question is: So what?
With Democrats in northern cities demanding immigration reform, and President Biden willing to cut a deal if for no other reason than helping Ukraine in its war with Russia and deterring other dictators, I would think that the time is ripe for Republicans to get a favorable deal.
The word here is Compromise. And it has more than four letters.
Oh, yes, Biden. He’s running for re-election.
Some Republicans would rather see this country and the world in flames than do something that might help Biden win re-election.
So much for love of country.
And patriotism? That depends on whether it will help you win an election.
