Donald Trump not only won the electoral vote but also the popular vote nationally, a rarity for Republican presidential candidates in at least the last 40 years.
What I don’t understand is how that could happen if the claims he and many Republicans repeatedly made about Democrats bringing in tens of thousands of illegal aliens to vote were true?
Or is it just true when he loses like he did in 2020?
Trump and his GOP allies have done much to undermine Americans’ faith in our electoral process with voter fraud claims that have never stood the test of court cases, let alone independent investigations. Even Republican state officials have dismissed such claims as false. The apparent goal of such claims was to set up challenges to vote totals should Trump lose. He won and all those claims have simply melted away.
Yet millions of Americans believed them.
The question is will they still believe them now that their candidate has won?
I met a woman on election day who made a comment about those illegal voters. When I responded with the observation that none of those claims have ever been proven in court or otherwise, she said she knew who I voted for.
That bothers me. I have no problem with people voting for a candidate because they agree with that person’s policies and political views. I have a big problem when people buy into unfounded allegations that undermine our republic. That is especially true of voting, which is the foundation of our form of government.
No responsible Republican state official has questioned the safety and honesty of voting in their state. And no court case challenging that vote has succeeded.
So please, stop with the unfounded voter fraud beliefs. This is our country we are talking about, not some fantastic conspiracy theory.
Get real.
