A fascinating thing happen on the way when conservative Republicans moved to make it easier to sue people for defamation.
The goal of Governor Ron DeSantis and his GOP legislative minions was to go after liberals for spreading false claims about conservatives, as everyone knows they do all the time.
Right now, it’s stalled in the Florida Senate. It stalled after conservatives such as Stephen Miller, an immigration hawk who is a longtime adviser to Donald Trump. A bunch of other influential conservatives also oppose the bill, according to the USA Today Network-Florida. They include right-wing commentator Jack Posobiec and radio host Trey Radel.
Now why would they be worried about easing defamation lawsuit rules?
Miller warned that “leftist plaintiff’s attorneys (will)… spend the next generation bankrupting every prominent conservative in Florida.”
Interesting.
Is Miller et al worried that conservatives will lose lawsuits because what they are saying about others is demonstrably false? Are they worried their lies will be called out in court?
If that wasn’t the case, why would they be worried about the bill? Afterall, DeSantis and his fellow Republicans are aiming to make life miserable for liberals.
Yet, liberals have been quiet about the bill. Perhaps that is because they know that anything they tell the Legislature will either be ignored or used as proof of why making it easier to sue for defamation is needed.
Or perhaps they agree with Miller: Making it easier to sue will help them curtail the extreme right’s lies.
Two possibilities: DeSantis and his fellow Republicans bought into the lies being told by extreme conservatives about liberals or they just didn’t think this one through.
Where is John McCain when you need an honest conservative?
