The Soviets called them “Useful Idiots”. They were not Communists, not even Fellow Travelers, those who were not members of the party but sympathized and helped them achieve their goals.
“Useful Idiots” were, and still are, people who may even be opposed to the Russian rulers, such as Vladimir Putin, the current Russian dictator, but advocate policies that advance their goals.
Ukraine, for instance. Today we have members of Congress who oppose more aid to Ukraine for a variety of specious reasons: It’s not our war, we’ve given them too much already, or there is corruption in their government, or they want the Democrats to give them everything they want on U.S. border security, or they want the Republicans to stop connecting the two issues so they don’t have to give much or nothing at all. (Hint: “Compromise” is not a four-letter word.)
Whatever the reason, these Useful Idiots are playing into Putin’s hands by weakening Ukraine and furthering his efforts to destroy that country and make it part of the Russian Empire once again, putting it under his thumb. They are also advancing the interests of America’s other friends—China, Iran, North Korea—by showing we cannot be trusted to help our real friends and allies.
No, Ukraine vs. Russia is not our war. And our troops are not fighting it. Our weapons are helping Ukrainians to retain their independence, regain land Russia stole, and, by the way, degrade the Russian army. It also discourages China from invading Taiwan, and helps keep North Korea and Iran in check.
And all that helps prevent a shooting war that would American troops into it.
So, Useful Idiots, please learn from history and the way dictators operate. Get over yourselves and work to preserve freedom and restore peace.
