GOP Backs Dictators

GOP to Dictators: Go for it! We’ll do nothing to stop you.

Republicans seem to have reverted to their 1930s’ predecessors. They were either isolationists or non-interventionist, depending on how you want to label their positions. It really doesn’t matter because the result was the same: The United States should do nothing to help stop the Nazis from conquering most of Europe.

Fortunately, for the world anyway, President Franklin Roosevelt wanted to help. Apparently, he wanted to get involved militarily, and did that as far as he dared to go by having the U.S. Navy escort convoys partway across the Atlantic and perform anti-submarine patrols. He also made America the “Arsenal of Democracy” by finding ways to supply Britain with weapons and other war material.

Fast forward to today. President Biden, the Democrats, and a minority of Republicans who realize the danger our country faces want to supply the Ukrainians with the ability to fight the Russian aggression Vladimir Putin launched in a bid to destroy Ukraine.

The trouble is that Donald Trump and a majority of Republicans in Congress would rather see a dictator win than help a democratic nation survive. Trump’s motive is clear: He likes dictators. The GOP senators and congresspeople kowtow to Trump so if he’s against something, so are they.

So, while they sit back and watch, the Ukrainians are struggling to survive, getting weaker as the Russians now outgun them.

All this encourages China as it looks toward Taiwan, and all the other dictators around the globe.

Biden et al are not even suggesting sending U.S. troops. They just want to provide the Ukrainians with the tools they need to defend themselves and defeat the Russians, which the Ukrainian army has shown it can do when it has the tools.

Why are the Republicans so anxious to make this world more dangerous for the United

States just to win what they seem to think are political points that will help them?

This is not the 1930s. We are not “protected” by the Atlantic Ocean should the world be thrown into another global war.
