Moscow Marjorie (Taylor Greene) intends to force a vote on whether to oust Speaker of the House Mike Johnson because, she says, the Republican leader has betrayed conservative values, for among other things, supporting aid to Ukraine. I guess she favors Moscow, capital of a country run by a dictator, Putin.
One of her reasons for forcing a vote, though, is because Democrats are likely to vote to keep Johnson on as Speaker. She believes that supporting a conservative Republican, and a Christian at that, will hurt Democrats at the polls.
Could she be right?
Gee, let me think. What arguments could a Democrat use to justify not kicking McCarthy out as speaker, as they voted to do to former Speaker Kevin McCarthy?
One thing is that the Democrats can simply say that they don’t believe Johnson has lied to them unlike McCarthy whom they accuse of breaking promises.
An even better argument for the Democrats is that, unlike Moscow Marjorie, they want to govern, not have chaos that paralyzes the nation, such as happened when McCarthy was kicked out. For three weeks, Congress was frozen because without a Speaker nothing was getting done in the House.
The purpose of Congress is to run the country by passing laws and allocating how the government will spend its money. Not everyone agrees that Congress does the right thing. I know I, for one, find myself appalled at some of the things those folks do. It’s the worst system—except for all the others out there. Ultimately, we get what we vote for. So, in the end, it’s our own fault.
But I digress.
I can’t say that it surprises me that someone like Moscow Marjorie would like to shut this country down by throwing the House into chaos and denying the government the money needed to operate. That is, after all, one of her complaints about Johnson—he had the audacity to reach an agreement with the Democrats to keep the government open.
No matter how much you disagree with his politics, Johnson is acting responsibly in seeking compromise with the Democrats.
As for Moscow Marjorie, would she be happier in the Russian State Duma?
